EBITDA is earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. The press release does not give a net profit (profit after tax) figure, so we do not report one. For the first half, profit before tax was Rs 29 crore against a loss of Rs 24 crore.

What drove the improvement

Same-store sales growth (SSSG), which compares sales at stores open in both periods, was 4.4% for KFC, 9.9% for Costa Coffee and 8.1% for Biryani By Kilo. Brand contribution margins rose 1.3 percentage points in the quarter. Chairman Ravi Jaipuria said that despite steep inflation in raw materials and wages, operating leverage from higher same-store sales and tight cost control lifted EBITDA.

He also said growth was led by transactions and by sales at on-premises outlets, which he called key to sustainable growth.

Store network and expansion

The company added 70 net new stores in the quarter, 50 of them KFC, taking its network to 2,325 stores globally and 1,923 in India. It says it is on track to meet its full-year guidance of 200 to 220 net new stores.

Merger approval

The chairman said the company has received approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the planned merger, and that it expects other approvals in line with its initial plans. The release does not name the merger partner.

What to watch next

In our view, the next quarters will show whether the pre-tax profit can be sustained after the merger approvals. See more in our results coverage.
