Why Tata Chemicals reported a loss
The company attributed the lower EBITDA mainly to lower realisations in overseas subsidiaries, especially US exports to South-East Asian markets. It also cited higher energy and logistics costs in the UK and the temporary suspension of operations in Kenya.
The loss after tax was also linked to reduced other income and lower joint venture income. Management said a sharp rise in UK natural gas costs hurt consolidated results, and that the prolonged Middle East conflict pushed up inputs such as limestone and CO2, as well as freight.
Standalone business held up
On a standalone basis, revenue was Rs 1,303 crore, up 8%, and EBITDA was Rs 292 crore, up 22%. Profit after tax from continuing operations was Rs 122 crore, down 31%.
For the first half, consolidated profit after tax before exceptional items and minority interest was Rs 10 crore, against Rs 535 crore a year earlier.
What to watch next
Management said the near-term outlook for soda ash remains challenging because of excess global capacity and weak pricing. It sees stable growth in salt and bicarbonates. In our view, UK gas costs and the Kenya restart are the numbers to follow next quarter. See more in our results news section.
