Earnings per share were Rs 26.76 against Rs 29.73. Profit also fell from Rs 300.99 crore in the June quarter, and revenue was lower than Rs 1,168.02 crore in that quarter.

Why profit fell

The filing does not carry management commentary, so this is our reading of the numbers. Three lines moved against profit. Other income, which includes treasury income, dropped by about Rs 26.6 crore. Freight outward expenses rose 53% to Rs 120.2 crore from Rs 78.4 crore, and cost of materials consumed rose to Rs 469.2 crore from Rs 437.9 crore. Partly offsetting this, finance costs fell to Rs 1.6 crore from Rs 7.7 crore and the share of profit from a joint venture rose to Rs 6.9 crore from Rs 0.4 crore.

Standalone figures

On a standalone basis, which covers only the parent company, revenue from operations was Rs 1,032.49 crore against Rs 959.79 crore, and net profit was Rs 265.01 crore against Rs 277.21 crore. There was no exceptional item in the quarter.

What to watch next

In our view, two things matter: whether freight costs ease, and how much of profit continues to depend on other income. First-half consolidated profit was Rs 550.43 crore against Rs 582.64 crore. More earnings are in our results news.
