Why profit grew faster than operating profit

Operating profit grew 7.28%, but net profit grew almost twice as fast. The filing shows the difference came mainly from lower provisions: Rs 2,759 crore against Rs 4,132 crore a year ago. Credit cost, which measures provisions against loans, fell 17 basis points to 0.22%. The press release does not itemise exceptional items, so readers should check the full results filing for any one-off gains.

Loans, deposits and asset quality

Whole-bank advances grew 17.84% to Rs 52.08 lakh crore and deposits rose 12.27% to Rs 62.78 lakh crore. The CASA ratio, the share of low-cost current and savings deposits, was 38.32%, down from 39.63% a year earlier. Gross NPA (bad loans as a share of total loans) improved to 1.39% from 1.73%, and net NPA to 0.36% from 0.42%. The capital adequacy ratio stood at 16.09%.

Net interest margin (NIM) for the whole bank was 2.94% in Q2, up 8 basis points from the June quarter.

What to watch next

In our view, the key points for the coming quarters are whether deposit growth keeps pace with the faster loan growth and whether the CASA ratio, which has slipped, stabilises. See more results news on ArthaWire.
